Designed by Inese Sang
Smilga is a symmetrical shawl knit top down. Starting with a Garter Tab Cast On it proceeds with an even increase ratio along the side edges and central spine to obtain its final triangle shape.
Simple cables of the main body bloom into diamond shaped sections of contrast colour bobbles worked in intarsia technique with a crochet hook before smoothly transitioning into an end ribbing.
Smilga is a Latvian word for bentgrass – a thin grass with a long stalk and generous top of delicate, blooming panicles full of tiny seeds. The shawl evokes the elegance of this meadow plant with thin cables running throughout the main body and culminating in the beautiful geometry of bobble diamonds reminiscent of the wide, open panicles of the grass.
