Threads of Memory is a book about memory, and about the part it plays in everything I make. For me, designing has always been something magical. It allows me to become a child again and return to places I believed were long forgotten. As I work, a face, a voice, or a memory hidden for years suddenly finds its way back, as though it had simply been waiting for the right moment to appear. While my designs are inventions, the memories and the stories they bring with them are not. I am simply finding my way back to them.
Like everything I design, this book begins in El Salvador. I grew up in Santa Tecla, a sleepy colonial town of cobblestone streets and white adobe houses, and I still draw from that childhood more than from anything else. My grandmother Manuela is in these pages. So are her green eyes, her black polka-dot dresses, the bit of red lipstick she was never without. She grew daffodils, narcisos we called them, after her father Narciso, and planted the cypress trees that stood watch over her garden. When I knit certain greens, I am back among those flowers before I know it.
